What is a Cataract?

A cataract is a common condition where the natural lens inside a person’s eye becomes cloudy, usually with increasing age, causing symptoms such as blurred vision, glare, difficulty reading, or trouble seeing while driving (especially at night). The good news is that a cataract can be safely and effectively treated with a relatively short outpatient surgical procedure so that it no longer causes any visual problems.

Cataract Surgery

The only treatment for a cataract is to have it surgically removed and replaced with an intraocular lens implant. This is done by a procedure that usually takes only a few minutes. It is performed at an outpatient surgical facility, and most patients are back to their normal activities by the next day. We will review the surgical procedure with you in detail and tell you exactly what to expect. It is normal to feel a little anxious about surgery, but we will do everything we can to make it a comfortable experience for you.

One of the exciting benefits of modern cataract surgery is the ability to minimize your dependence on glasses afterwards. Depending on the health and shape of your eyes, as well as your lifestyle, you may be a candidate for a specialty lens implant, such as an astigmatic or multifocal lens implant. Through the use of these lens implants, it may be possible to see well even without glasses! During your evaluation, we will discuss all the intraocular lens options that you are a good candidate for.
