Diabetic Retinopathy
Diabetes is a well known cause of visual loss. Elevated blood sugar levels can cause circulation problems, which can lead to visible changes in the retina (“diabetic retinopathy”) that include bleeding, blood vessel abnormalities, and swelling (“macular edema”). Therefore, if you have diabetes, an annual complete eye exam is essential to detect and monitor any signs of changes. Mild forms of diabetic retinopathy may be addressed with better blood sugar and blood pressure control, while more advanced forms require specialized treatment by an ophthalmologist. We will work together with your primary doctor to minimize the impact diabetes may have on your vision.
